The short answer
- Stick with Atlas if you are forming a Delaware C-corp to raise money.
- For a non-resident LLC, a Wyoming LLC elsewhere avoids Delaware’s $400/yr tax.
- doola adds an address and optional tax filing; Northwest is the low-cost option; Firstbase keeps the startup tooling.
Stripe Atlas is one of the most searched names in company formation, and for good reason: it is the cleanest path to a Delaware C-corporation. But a large share of founders searching for it actually want something else — a low-maintenance LLC they can run from abroad. For them, Atlas has three limitations:
- Delaware only. Delaware’s LLC annual tax is now $400 a year.
- No address, bookkeeping or tax filing included.
- Built around C-corps. Its strengths (equity issuance, 83(b) elections) matter little for a single-owner LLC.
The alternatives
| If you want… | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Everything handled, any state | doola | EIN, agent, address included; optional tax filing |
| Lowest running cost | Northwest | $39 formation, $125/yr agent, privacy by default |
| Startup tooling, Wyoming or Delaware | Firstbase | One-time fee, à la carte mailroom and $899 tax package |
| $0 upfront | Bizee | Cheapest entry if you manage the renewal |
Three-year cost versus Atlas
| Provider | Year 1 | 3 years | 3 years incl. Form 5472 |
|---|---|---|---|
| doola | $397 | $1,111 | $6,217 |
| Firstbase | $798 | $1,516 | $3,314 |
| Northwest Registered Agent | $339 | $709 | $1,709 |
| Stripe Atlas (Delaware only) | $500 | $1,500 | $2,500 |
| Bizee | $100 | $518 | $1,518 |
| DIY (file it yourself) | $200 | $520 | $1,520 |
Wyoming LLC, owner with no SSN, provider handles the EIN where it offers to. “Incl. Form 5472” uses the provider’s own filing service where one exists, otherwise an independent preparer estimate of $500/yr. Model your own case in the cost calculator.
Atlas is shown in Delaware because it forms nowhere else. Every alternative is shown in Wyoming.
When Atlas is still the right answer
If you have co-founders, plan to raise a priced round or a SAFE from US investors, or need to issue stock options, a Delaware C-corp is the standard and Atlas is a very good way to get one. Read our Stripe Atlas review for the details.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to Stripe Atlas for an LLC?
For most non-resident founders, doola (all-in-one) or Northwest Registered Agent (lowest running cost), both forming in Wyoming.
Can I still use Stripe without Stripe Atlas?
Yes. A US LLC with an EIN and a US bank account can usually apply for a US Stripe account regardless of which service formed it.
Is Stripe Atlas worth it?
For a venture-track Delaware C-corp, yes. For a solo LLC, you pay Delaware’s $400 annual tax for advantages you are unlikely to use.
